Intel is looking at harvesting free energy to power devices such as mobile phones, as well as researching other technologies to reduce power in electronics devices and data centers. At an event late last week focusing on its “Eco-Technology” developments, the company’s CTO, Justin Rattner, outlined a series of long-term initiatives into power saving and generation. Most of the technologies discussed are under development in Intel labs and are unlikely to reach the marketplace in products for at least three to five years.

BT Media & Broadcast has expanded its global media network to South Africa. This network extension is expected to enable the delivery of enhanced real-time video content between Johannesburg and various media hubs worldwide, offering an alternative to satellite connectivity into and out of the region. The GMN, with coverage in more than 70 locations across ten countries worldwide, is based on multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) networking technology that is used to supply secure converged video, sound and data internetworking.

MFG.comMFG.com, the largest online marketplace serving the global manufacturing community, has secured a relationship with Lionbridge to localize the MFG.com online marketplace into ten languages. This will enable the rapidly growing marketplace to expand its global presence. Lionbridge will also support MFG.com’s future global expansion to include Japan, India and Brazil. MFG.com is using Lionbridge web-based translation management platform Freeway(TM) to automatically push its content directly from its content system to the latter company for translation. Once translated, the content is automatically reinserted into the MFG.com environment. As a result, the company will be able to speed its update cycles using a touch-free translation management process, and can focus on the core task of providing a global marketplace for the manufacturing community.

CiscoInnovation in places all over the world is driving a second phase of globalization, and Cisco Systems Inc. wants to tap into that trend through “brainforming,” the networking giant’s CTO, Padmasree Warrior, said. Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis and social networking can help make it happen, she said. According to Warrior, earlier emerging markets used to be passive recipients of innovations done in developed markets. Now innovation, as well as capital, is coming from emerging markets as well, Warrior said. She cited India as an example, which has developed ways of using SMS (Short Message Service) for mobile transactions that are new to developed countries.
