EmoryA development arm of Emory University is partnering with financial organizations to bring experts to Atlanta for a conference examining the pitfalls and opportunities presented by globalization. The presidential election process is putting a spotlight on the global economy, as candidates grapple on the impact of international trade on domestic workers and its role in jumpstarting the slow-growing U.S. economy. The forum will release a report next week on a new U.S. assistance program to help American workers displaced by the global economy adjust to their new situation.

Ed BarlowOn mlive.com, Emily Monacelli talks about comments made by Ed Barlow, a futurist and president of Creating the Future Inc., at Grand Valley State University’s Loosemore Auditorium. During his discussion of staying competitive in the wake of globalization, Barlow said that companies can throw out traditional business models — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Instead, companies must participate in a “continuum of change” of eight areas to stay competitive, including being concerned for the environment, keeping up with science and technology and recognizing changing demographics. Barlow paints a bleak picture for those who are not ready to embrace technology and globalization and says that the ones who are ready face a challenge.

MWDAccording to the recently released third annual RSM McGladrey Manufacturing and Wholesale Distribution National Survey (MWD) conducted on 911 firms, companies reporting their business conditions as “thriving and growing” declined by nearly 10% in the past year. However, business remains good for more than a third of survey participants within the following industry segments: food and allied products, medical devices, industrial equipment, metal fabrication and electronics. While cost advantages of globalization are shrinking — respondents moving production or services offshore since 2007 have declined by 20% — opportunities to benefit from participating in the global economy remain underutilized.
